Professor Oyekanmi Nashiru is the Director (Research) for Genetics, Genomics and Bioinformatics Department at the National Biotechnology Development Agency, a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Abuja, Nigeria. He joined the Agency in March, 2008. He have a broad background in Biochemistry, Genomics and Bioinformatics. His research includes Enzyme catalysis, genetic engineering (a combination of classical molecular biology/ biochemistry, including gene cloning, expression and purification of proteins, site-directed mutagenesis, in vitro evolution of enzymes for mutants of phenotypic interest), synthetic organic chemistry (synthesis of specially designed molecules), retro-virology (including antiretroviral resistance genotypic studies and tissue culture), antiviral development (including monoclonal antibodies, vaccines and small molecules), phytomedicne development and computational biology (bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics) and Microbiome. As PI or co-Investigator on several grants (including NIH-, Welcome Trust, WHO- and ICGEB-funded grants), He (in collaboration with others) laid the groundwork for bioinformatics education, training, research and development in West Africa, ultimately leading to the formation of the African Bioinformatics Network (ABioNet), the beneficiary of NIH-funded Human Heredity and Health in Africa Bioinformatics Network (H3ABioNet) in which he am a co-principal investigator.
